Alligator House by BuildingStudio
Another unique design of house was made by buildingstudio. It is called Alligator House, due to its alligator head shape. This affordable house was built on the effort of helping the Katrina refugee. buildingstudio approaches one of their client in Boulder, CO to see if if they’d be willing to contribute toward an affordable home for a Katrina refugee. Not only did the clients generously give their own money, they went into their community and raised additional funds towards the cost of construction. When finished, Neighborhood Housing Services who promotes and markets low-cost properties will offer the house at a vastly reduced rate.
The house is 872 sq ft, with 2 bedrooms, bath-and-a-half scheme for Central City, an impoverished inner-city neighborhood situated between the CBD and the Uptown Garden District. This house is designed 13 ft wide, to fit the long narrow lots typical in the City. They use metal grate steps for casual sitting while visiting with neighborhood. The street facade is clad in translucent white insulated plastic panels which are backlit to provide indirect lighting both for the exterior and interior living area. They use hardwood flooring and ceramic tile in the bathrooms. The second bedroom has a rolling wall along the hallway to open it up when privacy is not a concern. Exterior walls and roof are clad in factory-painted, preformed metal siding for ease of maintenance. With all of these modern features, the house looks modern, simple, but still affordable.

I can’t understand why we are not seeing shipping container based houses being built in this location. They are hurricane / fire safe and very livable if designed well. We have built one and building more using 1 up to 34 shipping containers. They are perfect for DIY and you can move in the day the container arrives on site, then start construction fitout!
