Six container cabin design by InterModal Design – part 1

May 03, 2010 Category: eco design, house

Trend of using shipping container as the base of a cabin or a part of building rooms becomes more popular these days. InterModal Design has designed 6 eco friendly  container cabin plans. InterModal Design believes in the power of simplicity, the importance of affordability and the necessity of green spaces to enjoy the comfort and beauty of nature.

To create a single structure that could be used in many ways, IMD studied Japanese home design and yacht design.  In these homes, tables, beds, and chairs appear to fold up into the wall.  It’s quite interesting and minimalist. The goal is to create a single structure with multiple functions which would take up as little space as possible. The 3 in 1 structure provides a living/dining room setting, bedroom setting, and open setting, for users to inhabit the space however they feel at any moment. The 3 in 1 design comes with four chairs which are stored flat and fold into a chair, a drop down table, and a drop down bed.

At the direction of clients, IMD will use energy-efficient materials and green products, including LED lighting, low-water consumption fixtures, and low-VOC paints.  And if you want to go off-grid or off-pipe, IMD can help with that, too.

In this post, we will inform you 2 designs :

0012 unit:

This is a single cabin design. Unit 0012 provides the most basic and compact lifestyle to enjoy nature. It allows the cabin to be shipped on one truck. Unit 0012 is a single 20 ft long, 8 ft wide, 8,5 ft  tall container.

0022 unit:

This is 2 cabins design. Unit 0022 is two 20 ft long, 8 ft wide, 8.5  ft tall containers side by side. Like all IMD units, the
0022 structure utilizes design efficiency philosophies employed in high end yacht design and harnesses the simplicity of ultracompact residential layout. Each unit may come with the 3 in 1 unit as an upgrade. It is a singular structure with multiple configurations that set up as a living area, dining area, or sleeping area. Included is a fold out bed, fold out table and chairs which retract neatly into the wall.

  1. I am not the first one to propose rapid response housing using containers. Haiti and Katrina are perfect examples. With hundreds of thousands of containers in port, a uniform package of sanitary and sewer connections could be designed to rapidly convert containers into minimalist housing.
Following disaster, or perhaps as part of an emergency plan, well sited water systems and sewage treatment and piping systems could be layed. These locations may be remote from the tin shack and shanty towns so that layout work could begin immediately. Simple foundation systems would be designed in advance. Within hours, minimal habital housing could be on the way with hundreds or thousands of structures inside of a month.
Ownership would need to be determined. a financial structure would grow up around these towns offering upgrades, maintenance, land management, etc…

  2. Hi Ro Po,

My name is Nicolas Allinder, I work at InterModal Design. We have recently been contacted to provide relief housing for the Chile earthquake victims. There is a tremendous potential for shipping containers in these situations. It is a massive undertaking which requires a great deal of logistics. Another issue is the cost of construction – keep in mind most individuals in Haiti live on pennies. A container alone costs over a thousand dollars. The biggest difficulty however, becomes the bureaucracy involved in projects of this scale and complexity.

Hopefully something will come from our efforts.

  3. i hope soo. InterModal Design has donea great effort by making these concepts… It’s really a great job, everyone should support this. Those concepts are really useful for emergency condition like on Chile and Haiti. Hopefully, someone in my country will bring them to here if there are some urgent conditions (i hope it will never be happened… very dilemmatic isn’t it ?)

    Intermodal,
do you have an idea of the cost associated in a particular region for the units shown in this article? While Haiti is very, very economically and financially challenged, there are viable options for not just short term but long term which I believe this may provide.

    Very curious on cost?
