Sustainable Prefab Shelter Called The Crib by Broadhurst Architects
This is a prefab shelter designed by Broadhurst Architects. The interest of choosing small, simple, sustainable shelter supports Broadhurst Architects to build a shelter, called the Crib. Some sustainable features are available.
This shelter was built as the effect of high popularity of the architect’s project, called Shack. Just like Shack, this eco-friendly shelter can be used for a weekend retreat, home yoga studio, backyard home office, or a cluster of small eco-cabins.
The Cribs has the basic form of traditional American corn cribs. The traditional wood timber framing is substitute by shop-fabricated galvanized steel bent structural system. The design also adopts a structural simplicity of a common scaffolding system. Manufactured wood beams connect the bents.
The skin’s structure is made by structural insulated panel (SIP) floor and roof systems, wall panels of unpainted heat treated native poplar and recyclable translucent insulating multilayer polycarbonate sheets. The prefabricated wall panels are weather-stripped and clipped into the framework.
There are 2 types of the shelter, the basic and full type. The basic type serves as a very nice gazebo, provides 175 sq ft of roofed space and 125 square feet of exterior deck space. The tiny structure is open to the elements (other than optional screen panels and doors) and can be assembled in a few days. The full type provides 250 square feet of enclosed space and 125 square feet of exterior deck space. This structure is assembled and finished with SIPs roofing and flooring in about two or three weeks. All of the types can be elevated on an enclosed foundation that can house the bathroom, or storage space.
The building can be completed by small propane-fired stainless steel fireplace. Also, an electric or hydronic radiant floor system can be attached. The other sustainable features that can be attached such as LED lighting, photovoltaic system, and solar heat water system.
Some sustainable aspects that are provided in the shelter :
- a very small and efficient floor plan
- minimal site disturbance (The Crib is designed to resist any pests and wild animals)
- efficient fabrication and fast assembly process
- high insulation values through the use of SIP, insulted glass, multi-layer polycarbonate panels
- efficient heat system
- uses of some recyclable materials, such as steel, aluminum, fiberglass, polycarbonate
- earth-friendly heat treated poplar for siding and limited interior finishes
- energy efficient ceiling fan “air conditioner”
- uses of LED and CFL lighting
- the building is recyclable, can be dismantled and moved to other location
