Unique Design of Palmyra House by Studio Mumbai
A unique design of house was created by Studio Mumbai. This house is used for retreat house for the weekend. It is located at Nandgaon, Maharashtra, India, near the Arabian Sea.
The house is located inside a coconut plantation, consist of two wooden louvered structures. Anchored to stone platforms, the structures overlook a network of wells and aqueducts that weave the site into an inhabitable whole.
Some local materials were used, such as the trunks of the local Palmyra palm, local basalt for the boundary walls, plinths and paving, plaster finishes were pigmented with sand from the site, etc. Another materials were also used, such as seam aluminium for the roof, teakwood and India Patent Stone for the interior surface finishing, etc.
The collaboration between the architect and the craftsmen created a unique combination between foreign and local design. The craftsmen detailed the exterior.
A pool, located between the two buildings. provides a channel for swimming, with expansive views of the sea to the west and views into a dense foliage of palms to the east. Living room, master bedroom, and study room are located at the north side, while the kitchen, guest bedroom, and dining room are provided at the south side.
The louvers provide passive cooling, while water for the house is harvested from three on-site wells, filtered and stored at the top of a water tower and fed by gravity to the house. These features make the house to be well adapted to the environment.
