House of Five Dreams, a Green Home Building in a Desert
Located in Sonoran Desert, this green home building, called House of Five Dreams, was designed by Jones Studio Inc. This is a house, combined with a private museum. A protection from sun light and heat becomes a consideration, because of the hot desert environment. With modern design, this sustainable building can be an “oasis” for the inhabitants in the desert environment.
The 30,000 sq ft eco friendly building consists of 2 big parts, the museum in the lower level, and the residence part above. The lower level is surrounded by 4 ft thick rammed earth walls. This material can provide temperature and humidity control that are needed to keep the collections in good condition. This was inspired by the natural condition when the collection was still not excavated. in the ground.
The upper space is the residence part. This part is designed with modern touch, with a lot of glass materials used. The 6,000 sq ft eco construction rests on the massive rammed earth base, just like a clean white glass box. In order to protect the sustainable house from the harsh sun light hinged mesh skins are provided. These skins can be opened, to provide better views to the desert, and closed to protect the house.
The interior of this sustainable buildingis dominated with white color and glass materials. These can provide modern, simple, and clean aesthetic. The use of undulating wall of stacked 1/4” glass slabs provide a dramatic play of light and shape off-set, to make the interior more dynamic.
The using of rammed earth wall, glass material for walls, and hinged screen provide examples for the adoption of green building technology especially to control the storage condition and to provide natural ventilation, and natural lighting. This modern design really can provide a good view for the desert.
