Bengt Sjostrom Starlight Theater by Studio Gang Architects
This theater is designed by Studio Gang Architects for Rock Valley College, to replace an existing outdoor venue. This theater is for for the performing arts.
This theater has an origami-like roof that can be opened and closed. By this roof, the outdoor sense of performing activities can be maintained by opening the roof, and still can be done in a bad weather by closing the roof. The central theater space forms an unexpected vertical axis to the sky, an observatory to the stars through a kinetic roof that opens in fair weather. When the roof is totally opened, the shape will be like the petals of a flower in a helical order, each roof petal overlaps its neighbor.

The development processes took 3 phase :
- Phase 1 : the expanded seating bowl that seats 1100, ticket building, toilet rooms, sculpted landscape and illuminated terraces
- Phase 2 : the copper-clad proscenium, its rigging and the 30′ x 60′ translucent sliding stage doors
- Phase 3 : the faceted roof structure of wood and steel
Anybody having problems viewing this in google chrome, it looks all messed up. **Edit** Just opened it up in IE8 and it worked fine.
